I kid, but really, going to see THE Locust back in the late nineties, on acid, that was some good times. I never wore skinny pants or a fancy haircut, but that didn’t stop me from playing those first few records. Keyboards in grind seemed hilarious at the time, I had no idea it would be beaten into the ground like it was (and I don’t mean by The Locust, but the myriad of keyboard faux-grind bands that emerged in their wake). I guess the nineties were innocent like that. Anyway, my buddy Jason made me a tape with the 7″ and the split 10″ and told me that this is what Godzilla listens to as he stomps Tokyo. He had me at Godzilla.
So today’s upload is from the tail end of the pre-costume era of The Locust, I think the splits with Arab On Radar and Melt Banana were out around this point. This tour was in fact with Arab On Radar, and I can’t believe I haven’t uploaded their set from this show yet, I must be slipping! The show took place in Bakersfield, with the band smashed inside a boxing ring surrounded by a handful of kids. Maybe not the wildest Locust show, but a unique one for sure. Dave is on drums, Gabe is on guitar, this was a killer lineup of the band. So jam this video, and if you want to skip the youtube video, there is also a link to a small quicktime .mov version of the video that you can download and watch on your own. Check the bottom of this post.
So today BREADWINNER came up on one of the message boards I frequent, and I right away had to throw them on and get down with this band again. Well, a few people were inquiring about more Breadwinner, all I know of are two live sets that used to be online in a few spots years ago. These aren’t all over the place like they used to be so I’ve decided to make this, along with the CD, available here.
If you aren’t familiar with Breadwinner, you should be. Here’s why:
they are totally mathy
they are totally instrumental
they are totally wicked
they are totally lo-fi as fuck
they were doing this before most everyone else
So here’s the CD, which is just a short collection of two 7″ EPs and a few extra bonus songs, and then there are two live shows that I have barely any info on. The live sets rock though, and if you really like Breadwinner they are essential for the unreleased tunes.
Grab these and if you dig them, leave some comments!
Taken from a myspace bulletin, shoved in my back like a knife, ’cause it looks like this shit ain’t even coming to California. What the fuck is up with that? Who the hell grinds Boise, Idaho, but not Oakland? No offense to people from Boise, but god damn!
Well, I ain’t gonna hate. The bands are all wicked as fuck, so if they are coming through your neck of the woods, then go support some touring grinders.

Were still all boxed up but hopefully we’ll take care of that this weekend. All the videos are still packed away, so today’s upload is a couple more songs from one of our local favorites, GIANT SQUID. We’ve uploaded the first and second songs from their set at 924 Gilman a little over a month ago. Turn it up loud and fight a shark to it.
Oh, and Giant Squid’s CD is probably all sold out by now, so you loose if you missed it. Somebody please sign this band and get it in wider circulation! That record is probably my favorite of the year so far.
Well, I’m back from the UK, all rested up from one of the more fun trips I’ve been on in a while. The footage is great and Sleep fans are going to love it. For now the plan is to do some sort of DVD in the future, but hopefully I can put something special up here sooner than that. It will be worth the wait though.
So today I’m getting back in to the swing of the blog, but I’ve still got a lot of my videos boxed up and I’m still working on unpacking. I’ll upload as much as I can until my next trip, to Seattle with the band Skeletonwitch, documenting the recording of their next album. That will be followed with a brief tour down the west coast, so come on out and say hey (or smoke me out / buy me a beer?). I’ll post dates when I have them.
On to today’s post! INTEGRITY!!!! I don’t have any info on this old, much watched and generated video, it’s not even the whole show as it cuts off after a few songs. But it’s classic Integrity. The lyrics are all different, and Dwid looks like a teenager. If you like Integrity, then check this shit out. If anyone has a better copy or the fulls et (or any other Integrity videos), get in touch!

Today’s post is a long tune from Oakland’s THE WORSHIP OF SILENCE. They barely play out it seems, so I had to get out and see them at The Stork Club when they played in March. This is the first song from their three song set, and also it’s the opening tune on their self released CD (which I think they got just in time for this show).
You’ve probably never heard of these guys, but go ahead and check them out. They play slow-ish music with vocals that certainly stand out from other bands in their genre. If you dig it, be sure to check out their myspace page to hear the mp3s of this song and a few others as well. ne yo mad mp3
THE WORSHIP OF SILENCE
“It’s Not Better Than The Drugs”
Live at The Stork Club
Oakland, CA
March 14th, 2009
Recorded by HASHTHRASH and MrsTHRASH
No, no, no, the site itself is not going to sleep, we aren’t shutting it down, I mean that we are going to the UK for the ATP to see the mighty SLEEP!!!!! I know, we just moved, and now this, sorry we haven’t been getting the videos up, but when we are back expect a flood, I promise! For now, we are following the smoke into the riff filled land, see ya sometime next week!
This band gives me ear boners. I like that have these laid back and yet heavy riffs, with killer beats and basslines running around behind it all. They played a few times a couple weekends ago, and here is two songs from their show opening for Mastodon and Kylesa at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. For the curious, after opening with these two songs, they went on to play “Cavernous Den Of Shame”, “Whittler Of Fortune” and closed with “Australopithecus”. Wicked.
