Quick note: Sorry the site hasn’t been updated in over a week, we moved and we’ve been busy unpacking. However, we are back and have lots of stuff on the way from Fang, Capitalist Casualties, Made Out Of Babies, Braveyoung, Intronaut, Kylesa, Mastodon, and much more!
Now, on to GRAYCEON!
Grayceon are still killing it. A few weeks ago they came out to the east bay and played Gilman for the first time, along with Giant Squid, who are featured in the previous post. By now, they’ve got this pretty down, and they seemed to be having a pretty good night. The sound was pretty good and people were up front and into the music. They started off with “The West”, which is exclusive to the Giant Squid split 7″, and then onto “Still The Desert”, which is today’s featured video below. After that they played a new (and long) song that for now is being called “Daybreak”, and then closed the set out with “This Grand Show Is Eternal”. Pretty damned killer. They are touring the U.S. with Giant Squid in August, so check their myspace for dates!
Well, I love me some GIANT SQUID. So of course I was totally stoked to see them in my neck of the woods, playing at Gilman finally! Fuck yeah! And on a totally badass bill, too!
Since Giant Squid was opening for Made Out Of Babies from New York City, the set was short, they played five songs in thirty five minutes. It was a great half hour though, the band was really on fire. They ripped through four songs from the latest self released album, playing “Blue Linkia”, “La Brea Tar Pits”, “Dead Man Slough”, and “Throwing A Donner Party At Sea” with Mrs Karyn Crisis on guest vocals. Karyn has a great voice and stage presence, so it was wicked to see her perform her parts live with the band. She’s on the CD, too.
“Ampullae Of Lorenzini”, from the first Squid album, closed their portion of the night. Awesome. The band sounded great, played pretty tight, and had a lot of energy. I hope they make it over to this side of the bay again soon.
Well, of course Corin and I shot video of every band on this great show, and we will have more reviews and videos coming from it over the weekend. Here’s the first video from the night, Giant Squid performing “Throwing A Donner Party At Sea” with Karyn Crisis.

“Throwing A Donner Party At Sea” with Karyn Crisis
Recorded live at 924 Gilman St
Berkeley, CA
April 11th, 2009
Here’s another set of Flashback videos shot at 924 Gilman. I’m currently working on a 25th Annniversary DVD on behalf of the club, and I am putting these videos out there to raise some awareness of the project, and hopefully to get other people with video footage, flyers, photos, soundboards, etc, to loan or donate footage for the project.
This is the third in the series, still way too heavy on stuff shot past 2000. I really need more stuff from the 80’s and 90’s especially!
So check out what you may have missed, or relive what you may have seen in person!
Every bit will be a great help! If you have any videos sitting on a shelf or in a box somewhere, or know someone that may have shot or collected shows back in the day, get in touch!
If you blinked, you might have missed MIDDIAN. This band was started by Mike from YOB when that great fucking band died. They put out a killer album and played a few times down this way. I was lucky and got to see them a few times, and this is hand down the best I’d seen them. They played the entire “Age Eternal” album, and just nailed it. Mike was still screaming at this point, too. There is so much damn energy in this performance!
If you are familiar with the band you might know that this band is done, done in by a year battling a lawsuit with another band called Midian. I think that drained them and killed the spark for this band. While that’s a bummer, I’m glad I caught this night on video at least. On the plus side, Mike has reformed the mighty YOB and I hear they will be doing a show in SF soon. So fuck yeah. Will has joined another favorite band of mine, Wolves In The Throne Room, playing guitar. No idea what this drummer is up to though.
So fuck yeah MIDDIAN, jam the shit out of this, and try finding their album somewhere. And keep an eye out for YOB!
It looks like a year of (seemingly) playing every single show in the area has paid off for the local grinders THOUSANDSWILLDIE, as they placed 2nd in the 2009 UGZ Speed Trials. Good job guys! Here’s the video from that set. If you live in the bay area, be sure to see them tonight at the DNA Lounge with Brutal Truth and Impaled!
If you live in the bay area, here’s a couple shows of interest. I’m gonna try to make all of them, but unless I can score a ride home from the show, I might wind up missing Negative Plane in SF. Anyone from Oakland going to this?
