KILL THAT CAT TV # 16 - PORTRAITS OF PAST
August 6th, 2008
PORTRAITS OF PAST have just reunited to play a handful of shows around the Bay area and New York City, and I’ve got their set from 924 Gilman in Berkeley, CA for you right here.
The 90’s were great for all sorts of music, and I loved the chaotic, screamy emo that was happening in the mid to late half of that decade. Yaphet Kotto, Red Scare, Page 99, all of them borrowing elements of bands like Portraits Of Past. I never got to see them, or really knew much about them other than some tapes my buddy made with them on it, so it was great to get the new discography CD out on Ebullition, and to find out that they were reforming to play the entire 1995 LP live!
Just about the entire show was rad, and I’ll have more on that in the future. Yaphet Kotto was supposed to reunite to play one final show, and they didn’t because Mag didn’t show up in time to play (he did after the band had left. TOTAL EPIC FAIL. I’m glad I saw them as often as I did, but I was way looking forward to one more final set. Oh well.
Portraits Of Past really made everyone forget about Yaphet, though, and tore through their set, some parts thrashing and crazy, other parts more hypnotizing and sad, it was a great ride. And for those that couldn’t be there, or just want to see it again, here’s the entire 1995 LP played live from start to finish.
And yes, I misspelled the first song on the video. Hey, if they can be a little bit sloppy, so can I. Fuck it.
