I first visited the bay area in 1999 on a California tour with an old band I was in. Our first shows were at 924 Gilman in Berkeley and some spot in Sacramento, both with this amazing band ARTIMUS PYLE. When I moved out here over a year later, I was excited about the idea of getting to see Artimus Pyle live a whole bunch. I thought these guys were great, and still do think that. They were serious and pissed, fast, dark and heavy, and also downright strange. Their guitar parts always seemed bizarre to me, but I loved it. So it was a bummer to see they were breaking up after this show with What Happens Next?, who were also breaking up. It was a relief to find out the flier was incorrect when it claimed it was both bands’ final shows. Bassist Robert Collins is discussing the “last show” rumor at the beginning of this video. Since he and his wife were moving out of state, it did make sense, but luckily they got together, released records, played shows, and toured for the next several years. Well, I’m stoked to post this video, it’s one of my favorites of the band. Watch it with the volume all the way up, and perhaps with a joint if that sort of thing suits you.
