Here’s a pretty old HIS HERO IS GONE video from their show in San Francisco at Epicenter, a punk record store. Gauze were supposed to play on this show, but due to someone hanging from and breaking a sprinkler pipe, the entire store flooded and Gauze didn’t get to play. This was probably not so kickass to anyone who worked or shopped at Epicenter, nor for His Hero Is Gone or Gauze, nor for anyone who had to deal with the mess. However, the set of songs His Hero Is Gone do get to play is pretty rad, and I’m glad this was captured on video. This was His Hero before Yannick was in the band. The Dead Of Night In Eight Movements 7″ would have been the current record at the time, though songs from the first LP are played too. These guys released a lot of records pretty fast it seemed, a bit over a year later and the band had two LPs out! That was totally fine by me. So, about this video, it’s got some issues. It sounds ok enough, but I’d love to get a cleaner copy of this. The worst thing about this video is that this seems like someone decided to use every single effect possible. I don’t know if it’s in-camera effects, or if it was done in post, but your mind will be blown. One effect after another, like they were just trying them all out. Please, folks, never use in-camera effects, or effects in general. Not on videos like these! If you see someone playing with effects, take their camera away! Included in this video is the aftermath of the broken pipe and the flooding, and people milling about outside while the fire department handles it. Please destroy anyone you see fucking up a venue, whether it’s a basement show or your local record store, warehouse, or whatever!

This cuts off right as the pipe broke and before His Hero Is Gone were about to Play “Raindance”:)
Weird Blast from the Past to see this, See Epicenter again, and see a lot of ( albeit then younger) faces that are still around the Bay Area punk scene- Floyd, Steve List, A shirtless Devon Morf ( he tried to shove his shirt in the pipe) , A camoflagued William From Copout / Talk is Poison as well as Momorin From Gauze and Kiku and Yoshio From Assfort, who were also on the bill. Gauze had played the night before at GIlman.
THe guy who broke the pipe I think didn’t realize it would snap under his weight, it wasn’t intentional. What was most hilarious is the fire department shows up and was so nonchalant about it, “Oh nothings on fire and nobody’s dead, no big deal”. The sprinklers also went off in Clothes Contact ( which is still there) downstairs, Oof.
