Sunny Day Real Estate has been a band that’s stopped and started numerous times since their beginning in the early 90′s. Some members wound up joining the Foo Fighters, Jeremy Enigk would perform solo, and every few years most of the band would get back together for a new album and a new tour, and the process would repeat itself. In 2002 three fourths of the band got back together under a whole new name, THE FIRE THEFT. While the SDRE reunions featured everyone except bassist Nate Mandell (who stuck with Foo Fighters), The Fire Theft included Nate, but not SDRE guitar player Dan Hoerner. I’m guessing that’s why this wasn’t just looked at as a Sunny Day reunion, and why they didn’t play old songs. Still, if you are a fan of Sunny Day Real Estate, The Fire Theft isn’t any different at all. At the time, when the demo songs were making their way around the internet, I was unimpressed. I downloaded it, and some live recordings from a tour they went on in early 2003, including this video, but it didn’t make much of an impression. Listening to it nearly a decade later, I’m surprised I wasn’t hooked right away. The songs are very good, just as good as any post-Diary Sunny Day album. The Fire Theft didn’t last, they did release an album but then I never heard anything from them again. Years later, Sunny Day Real Estate would reunite again, pretty much removing the need for these guys to do anything else under the name The Fire Theft. Well, for those that missed them, I still have that video, and here it is. The audio and video quality are excellent, but due to the position of the camera, you can’t see drummer William Goldsmith, nor their touring guitar player, but you do get great shots of Nate and Jeremy doing their thing. Watch this now if you are a fan of Sunny Day Real Estate.
