Here is the original demo CDR from the band MASTODON. This isn’t very rare or exclusive or anything, a quick search on google brings up a bunch of links to downloads. However, it IS totally kick ass, and this rip comes from my own copy of the demo that they were giving away / selling at shows back in 2000, and features Eric Saner on vocals. Eric left the band after just 6 months, and these songs wound up getting new vocals recorded over them for their next demo and first few records. Eventually the recording was re-mixed, re-mastered, and released as Call Of The Mastodon on Relapse. That was pretty cool and all, but I feel the label and band really dropped the ball by not including this original demo as bonus tracks. Thanks to the magic of internet, one can post things such as these and those who wish to enjoy them can do so.
Mastodon is currently recording their latest album in Atlanta, and I think they are shooting for it to be released by fall. While those of us who dig the band wait for that to hit, let’s go back and enjoy the roots of the band, back when they were young and skinny and would never have dreamed of some day opening for bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, and Metallica. The guys have come a long way from basements and dive bars! Play this loud!
